INTERSTATE SWEEPS INDUSTRY SAFETY AWARDS

(Springfield, VA) Interstate Van Lines received honors in all categories of fleet safety at the American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA) conference in Tucson, Arizona on March 31. Interstate received First Place for the AMSA's most prestigious safety award, the Safety Initiative Award, receiving this industry-wide honor for the fourth time in the past five years. Additionally, competing in the "up to 10 million mile" category, Interstate received First Place in Fleet Safety and First Runner-Up for Most Improved Fleet Safety.

Interstate President Arthur E. (Buddy) Morrissette and John Bowden, Director of Fleet Services, accepted the awards on behalf of Interstate. "Each Interstate team member is an integral part of the safety success story for our organization, and shares in the honors that we received in Tucson," stated Morrissette. "As a transportation provider, we recognize that we have a responsibility to the general public and to all of our employees to provide the safest possible operation of our more than 250 vehicles operating on the public highways. To that end, we have developed the strongest commitment to fleet safety in the industry - and year after year our record continues to reflect those efforts."

Interstate's safety initiatives have been industry leaders and models for others to emulate. As Bowden explains, "Safety is such an important facet of our industry that we share the results of these initiatives with others in our industry, in hope that it helps to make the industry safer for us all."

These awards continue a tradition of industry recognition for Interstate's safety initiatives. For the past five years no other major carrier has matched Interstate's achievements in safety. Interstate has been awarded First Place or First Runner Up for AMSA's fleet safety awards every year since 1997.

Interstate's focus on safety issues incorporates a broad range of award-winning, long-term initiatives, including a Driver Log Bonus program that rewards drivers for compliance with U.S. Department of Transportation regulations; a vehicle preventive maintenance schedule that greatly improves DOT vehicle compliance and reliability; and Interstate's first-in-the-nation mandatory drug testing program that was implemented before it became mandated by law.

Interstate's award-winning safety initiative for 2001, Fatal Vision: The Deadly Impact of Alcohol, focuses on a participatory demonstration of the effects of alcohol on driver function. Specially designed goggles simulate alcohol impairment at a level of .08 to .12% and .17 to .20% blood alcohol concentration (BAC). Using this simulation, the educational program reinforces the message that alcohol impairment is always dangerous and must be eliminated as a potential cause of crashes and fatalities.

Established in 1943, the Interstate family of companies today comprises a worldwide group of relocation management, transportation and logistic entities. For more than half a century, the Interstate team has been learning and building on its reputation for providing "Top Hat Service." The experience and attention to details led to Interstate being designated as ISO 9002 certified in August 2000.
